"Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from themselves" - Bessel A. van Der Kolk

Meet Melissa
I have been working in the mental health field for over ten years. I take an empathic approach to first understand, and help make sense of why the undesirable behavior is happening.
My goal as your therapist is to create a safe environment where we will work to solve current problems and improve positive thinking and behavior. My background is in treating, but not limited to: anxiety, attachment issues, trauma, emotional regulation, grief/loss, life transitions, and women’s issues. I am a certified EMDR therapist and utilize EMDR as the main treatment modality. I will also integrate CBT, attachment based techniques, and mindfulness when needed. I view therapy as a puzzle; we have some missing pieces, we have some broken pieces, and we have some whole pieces, let's work together to put the puzzle back together. I look forward to meeting you!

A BIT ABOUT THERAPY AND WHAT TO EXPECT
It can be challenging to meet someone new for the first time and feel expected to share your biggest challenges, stressors, suppressed emotions etc.
First and foremost, my first priority is to provide a safe place, in person or virtually, where all are accepted and treated with compassion.

What is EMDR anyway?
EMDR is a therapy that helps your brain reprocess difficult memories so they feel less intense and don’t keep affecting you in the present.
Instead of talking about the experience over and over, we use gentle back-and-forth stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) while you briefly focus on the memory. This process guides your brain in developing new neuropathways, so that the once very triggering memory becomes less intense and is desensitized over time.
